The "Duke University Porn Star" or more well-known as her porn name Belle Knox recently made a documentary with Condé Nast about how she became a porn star and what it's like to be one of the most promising porn stars in the modern world.
The five-part documentary named "Becoming Belle Knox" stars Miriam Weeks (Belle Knox's real name) and tells the story of the life of a porn star. In the documentary it gives us insight on the porn industry and how she started out.
In the documentary, Weeks revealed that she started porn because she wanted to pay her tuition fees in college since her parents were having trouble financially. "I Googled how to be a porn star", Weeks said and the next day she was in a Facial Abuse scene and was paid for $1,200.
Weeks said that she wanted to keep it a secret but unfortunately a classmate found out about it and told everyone. But unlike anyone else who is in a similar situation, Weeks decided to embrace the path she chose and says that, "I like the assertive, passionate person I'm becoming because of porn".
Although Miriam Weeks used porn to empower herself with the new found freedom of porn, in the documentary, Weeks revealed that it isn't always the case.
She reveals that the porn industry doesn't give you that much freedom. In one of her jobs, her agent refused to tell Weeks who she will be paired up with and it was later revealed that it would be a 50-something guy. She goes on to say that she didn't want to do it with the guy but had to pay a $300 "kill fee" and would be blacklisted by the company.
"I felt like crying during the entire scene and afterwards I was really, really upset", said Miriam. But she adds that, "Porn is like any other job. It's labor." Although she can clearly distinguish and separate herself from her porn persona of Belle Knox, some stars aren't so lucky or strong-willed.
One of Miriam's friends in the industry told her that she could no longer separate her work in porn from real life and decided to quit the industry while she still can. Although Miriam doesn't understand her friend's decision and rationalization she goes on to say, "People see Belle, but they don't see Miriam. I think I'm Miriam right now."
