"Bates Motel" ended its third season with "Unconscious," where the viewers see a clearer view to where Norman is really headed. With the events in series 3 finale, it seems season 4 sees a darker and more twisted relationship between Norma and Norman as the prequel pays tribute to "Psycho."
Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) goes downward spiral during the finale of "Bates Motel" season 3 titled, "Unconcious." Norma (Vera Farmiga) seeks the help of her other son, Dylan (Max Thieriot) as Norman continues to lose his grip. In a particular scene, Norman pushes his mother down the staircase because he is adamant in leaving her for Bradley (Nicola Peltz). When Norman finally drove off with Bradley, he then grabbed the wheel from her after declaring that his mother wants to talk to her.
Throughout the third season, Norman has had discussions with his jealous "mother," a clear indication of how his mind is extremely affected with Norma's presence, leading to his delusions. Viewers of "Bates Motel" however, already know what would happen to Highmore's character as it serves as a prequel to the American horror classic "Psycho."
"Bates Motel" creator Carlton Cuse already announced that they had already set an end date for the show. The hit A&E series will run for another two seasons with 10 episodes each, revealed by Cuse while doing an AMA on Reddit. The showrunner teased about the unfortunate events in Norma and Norman's relationship in season 4 that will inevitably lead to Norman's transition to the Norman in "Psycho."
"The Norman / Norma story is one of great tragedy - your hope as a writer is that the audience is hoping against hope that the characters don't meet their inevitable fate. Certainly everything that happens downstream won't be tragic - but Norman is definitely evolving into a character like that in the film."
A&E still has not released an official premiere date for "Bates Motel" season 4 but diehards of the show will surely watch out for it especially with how the third season ended. Creators of the show do not promise a happy conclusion with Norma and Norman but guarantee a lot of "Psycho" homage in the last two seasons.
