Academy-nominee cinematographer Roger Deakins will be working with Ridley Scott in the upcoming sci-fi film Blade Runner 2.
"Twelve-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Roger Deakins will join director Denis Villeneuve on Alcon Entertainment's sequel to BLADE RUNNER," a press release from the company stated.
No less than Alcon co-founders and co-CEO's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson announced Deakin's involvement in Blade Runner 2. Alcon Entertainment is a Warner Bros-based financing and production company. This is seen as a positive development, as some believe having Deakins onboard for his camerawork is a big step in the right direction.
Deakins recently worked the lens for Scott in Prisoners and Silcario. Other collaborations with the director include Fargo, The Shawshank Redemption, The Big Lebowski, and Skyfall. He just received the Pierre Angénieux Excellens in Cinematography Award at the Cannes Film Festival on 22 May when the announcement was made.
Scott is set to produce a follow-up to his 1982 film, the Blade Runner. While the production has yet to reveal the plot details, Blade Runner 2 might follow the storyline of Philip K. Dick's 1995 novel Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human.
Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, who also worked on Prisoners, takes the helm in Blade Runner 2.
"Film is scheduled to start principal photography in summer of 2016. Hampton Fancher (co-writer of the original) and Michael Green have written the original screenplay based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott. The story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard," the statement added.
Ryan Gosling is also in the middle of negotiations to star in Blade Runner 2 together with Ford. Whether he would be a Blade Runner or a Replicant if and when the talks positively conclude remain to be seen.
In Blade Runner 2, Ford will once again play Blade Runner Rick, who hunts down short-lived, bio-engineered human Replicants.
