'The Dark Tower' film will finally make it to the big screens with Sony revealing an official release date for January 2017. Nikolaj Arcel is set as the director for the adaptation for Stephen King's series of books.

According to Ace Showbiz, the live-action adaptation had long been planned since 2007 and Sony Pictures Entertainment finally picked a date for its release two years from now. It was revealed in the article that the studio is set to debut the film on January 13, 2017. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner are set to write the script based on King's 'Dark Tower' series.

The books incorporate themes of Old Western lore, fantasy and science-fiction and follow a character named Roland Descchain through a fictional world set upon a post-apocalyptic backdrop. His quest is to find a Dark Tower that has the connection to universes and is key to preserving a dying world. The eight books in the series began with the first publication, 'The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger', in 1982 and concluded with the eighth, 'The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole', in 2012.

In an article by Movie Pilot, it seemed that King's novels would be perfect for a massive big-screen adaptation considering its intricacy and overall Hollywood appeal. It said that together with a story that keeps fans guessing, the main character is worth the attention with his depth and complexity.

According to Screen Crush, Ron Howard was first tagged to direct the first installation in the long developing 'The Dark Tower' franchise. However in the end, it was revealed that director Nikolaj Arcel to see the ambitious project through with Howard joining as producer. The Danish filmmaker is best known for his work on the Oscar-Nominated period drama 'A Royal Affair' and critically acclaimed 'King's Game'.

He also took the role as screenwriter on films 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and 'Journey to Saturn'. It's unclear how the series will pan out but the article added that it may be the least challenging for the creative team to adapt the first book out of the rest.

'The Dark Tower' will be the first release based on the successful series of books by Stephen King. The franchise also spawned comic book adaptations as well as an online game spin-off named 'Discordia'.
