"Extant" recently completed its Season 2 with an explosive two-hour finale. The show's ratings have declined during its second season and got fans worried that it might not get a renewal nod from CBS. However, the cliffhanger ending of the finale boosted the fans' hope for a favorable outcome for the show.

Christian Post reports that the second season of the series did not live up to the original premise of the show which caused viewership to decline. The show had some weird and confusing moments that probably made viewers lose interest despite its interesting storyline.

However, the network's recent cancellation of "Under the Dome" presented a possibility that "Extant" might replace it in its summer lineup. If this does happen, fans are hoping that the show's ratings climb back up. The Season 2 finale's ratings were just slightly above the show's lowest rating yet.

According to Crossmap, having A-list actors Halle Berry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan may not be helping the show contrary to expectations. Given their Hollywood status, both demanded high salaries but they failed to pull the numbers up in the ratings.

Yibada reports that  the finale episode drew in 4.3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, even lower than the ratings of  "Under the Dome." The numbers have clearly dwindled since the show's premiere. If the ratings will be the only indication of the series' future then "Extant" fans may be in for a disappointment.

Although it may not be evident in the ratings, critics say Season 2 was much better than the first season. For this reason, CBS may opt to give "Extant" a chance to prove itself and hope that having Steven Spielberg as executive producer will finally pay off.

Will "Extant" be renewed or cancelled? Fans will just have to wait a little longer for an official announcement from CBS.
