The Vietnamese finance ministry might consider offering cash rewards of as much as VND 15 million ($1,964) to individuals who provide tips to authorities to help them track down corrupt government officials.
Bloomberg reported that the compensation scheme was part of Vietnam's anti-corruption campaign.
The government's website said the proposal was made in a draft circular regulating anti-corruption committees across the country, which some observers believe was a way to address Vietnam's inadequate whistleblower protection program.
Vietnam's Call to Snitch on Corrupt Officials
It is understood that enticing people to come forward to relay confidential information to crack down on corruption at all levels of government and society was part of the "blazing furnace" efforts initiated by Vietnamese Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong.
VCPost previously reported that hundreds of senior officials and business executives were detained in the process and even sentenced to death by real estate tycoon Truong My Lan about a $12 billion fraud case.
The anti-corruption campaign also resulted in the resignations of two presidents, two deputy prime ministers, and several party officials, which propelled public security minister To Lam to ascend to the presidency last month.
