Minneapolis Man Charged for Killing, Burning Victim in Basement Over $2,800 Rent Money

A 42-year-old man in Minneapolis has been charged with the killing of a 52-year-old man in 2020 over rent money.

According to CBS News, the man from St. Paul is facing two counts of first-degree arson and one count of second-degree murder for the death of Wayne Arvidson on February 28, 2020, over a $2,800 rental fee.

According to CBS News, authorities responded to a fire at 1800 Central Avenue around 2:30 a.m. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered Wayne Arvidson's body inside the building's basement.

An autopsy determined that Arvidson, a tenant of the building, had died from multiple blunt force injuries before being set on fire. Investigators found that Arvidson was in the process of being evicted for not paying rent.

The victim, who had sublet a room to the suspect, allegedly took $2,800 of rent money meant for the landlord. The suspect told investigators that Arvidson did not give the rent money to the landlord.

DNA of Minneapolis Suspect

DNA evidence linked the suspect to the crime scene, with a strong match found on a lighter near Arvidson's body. The suspect's phone was also traced to the location at the time of the incident.

The suspect was arrested on Monday, concluding a case that took over four years to be solved.
