‘Suicide Squad’ Updates: Joker, Harley Quinn origin revealed as film unveils connection with ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’

'Suicide Squad' may explore Joker's origins and relationship with girlfriend/sidekick Harley Quinn. It is also rumored to have a direct connection with another DC live-action adaptation 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'.

According to Cinema Blend, Oscar-nominee and musician Jared Leto will be portraying the famous supervillain Joker in the upcoming addition to the DC shared universe. He has joined the ranks of other Hollywood A-listers who have come to play the character in various adaptations including the late Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill and Cesar Romero. Leto joked about his role saying, "I can't wait for you to see this - they're going to lock me away in a box after this movie comes out."

An article by What Culture suggested that Joker's origins may be retold in one of the DC adaptations. Leto posted a photograph recreating the cover of Alan Moore's iconic graphic novel 'Batman: The Killing Joke' as if to hint that his character's origin story will make it on the big-screen somehow. The one-shot graphic novel depicted Joker as a tragic man who has fallen into a life of crime in order to help his little family survive.

The 43-year old actor has reportedly taken his new character to heart by extending Joker's antics even off-screen. He has reportedly sent cast mate Will Smith some bullets and Margot Robbie a live rat. His commitment allegedly made Robbie somewhat afraid for his well-being.

Robbie plays Harley Quinn, Joker's sidekick and girlfriend. Her character first appeared on 'Batman: The Animated Series' where she was depicted as completely devoted to Joker despite his disturbed nature. In the comic books, she began as a psychiatrist named Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel who worked at the Arkham Asylum and eventually became obsessed with Joker.

It was previously speculated that the upcoming film may shed some light on the strange relationship between the two supervillains - beginning with Harley's transformation into a mentally disturbed psychopath and the relationship abuse she suffers with Joker.

The film may also reveal connections with 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice', according to Screen Rant. Director Zack Snyder said that Batman was responsible for putting all the supervillain inmates in Belle Reve Prison where 'Suicide Squad' is set. A flashback scene of Batman chasing down Joker and Harley was featured in the comic-con trailer for 'Suicide Squad'.

Previous rumors hinted that the upcoming film's events would take place before 'Batman v Superman' with an ending that may feature a breakout instigated at the Belle Reve.

'Suicide Squad' is an action-adventure film scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016 under the direction of David Ayer. It follows a group of imprisoned supervillains who are recruited for a black ops mission in exchange for pardon.
