Furi is a stylish hack-and-slash action game that has been gaining traction this month. The game is being developed by The Game Bakers who announced that it will be released in spring of 2016 for both PlayStation 4 and PC.
Aside from stunning visuals, people are excited about the game because of its pedigree.
The French development studio The Game Bakers is an independent game development company built by ex-Ubisoft developers. In addition, the art for the game is by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki.
"The story seems to revolve around one who presumably goes by the name 'Furi' who is trying to escape an imprisonment of some kind and is in search of the 'Jailer' who is the key to his freedom," according to Game Precision.
The story of Furi is not really the selling point. The game will employ the all-boss fight gameplay as popularized by games like Warning Forever. This time, instead of a top-down shoot-em-up, Furi will be a combination of sword-fighting and dual-stick shooting.
Unlike the procedurally generated bosses of Warning Forever, Furi looks to use traditional methods of character creation with their bosses. Moreover, Furi is not about giant bosses.
The developers made a conscious effort to have regular-sized bosses with different patterns and attacks. Its focus is more on duels and being better than the boss on the screen. This makes for an exciting combination of old-school reflex heavy gameplay with a more modern twist. Winning will rely on the player's fast reaction and puzzle solving skills.
According to a PlayStation blog article written by Furi creator Emeric Thoa, "...what I would do if I could make my dream game, and I told him about this game that would be one long boss fight. A boss fight against an opponent similar to you, not a gigantic creature or a demon. A boss fight that felt like a duel — a tense, exhausting, and utterly rewarding duel."
The game is certainly twitch-based but will require lateral thinking as well. Looking at the teaser video brings back memories of old NES Megaman boss fights, or even the old Castlevania vibe. However, the art is certainly one of the attractions for the game.
French-based The Game Bakers have announced that Furi, a stylish action game featuring all-boss battles, is set for a spring 2016 release and will be available for both PS4 and PC.
