After releasing Rock Band 4 last October 6, Harmonix announced that Rock Band 3 (RB 3) tracks can be exported to Rock Band 4 (RB 4) for verified purchasers. As caveat, it also reminded the gaming community to start exporting songs from RB 3 as soon as possible. The developers said that they are losing their selling rights on RB 3 soon as they encourage RB 3 verified users to start exporting their desired tracks. In relation to this, on-disc purchases may be available sometime, but may not be possible in 2015.
Harmonix confirmed through a blogpost that importing songs from RB 3 to RB 4 is now possible, and reminded fans to import tracks as soon as they can. In an IGN report, Harmonix explained that they are losing their rights to sell Rock Band 3 any time soon and fans only have until October 30 to import tracks. After its expiration, the only option for players is to purchase it from traditional retailers until they run out of stock.
According to Gamespot, Rock Band 3 shall be removed from the Xbox Live Marketplace by October 30. In fact, the game could no longer be found in the Play Station Store. Rock Band 3, which has 83 tracks, is currently available for $20. However, songs purchased as DLC could still be transferrable with consoles of the same family. In relation to this, Harmonix clarified that some classics are non-transferrable due to licensing restrictions.
The export key in order to transfer tracks from Rock Band 3 to Rock Band 4 shall be offered to verified RB 3 purchasers. Shack News said that Harmonix shall verify Rock Band 3 ownership with an electronic checking system. After this, Harmonix will now turn its attention to Rock Band Network tracks.
While on-disc soundtracks may be available sometime, the option now for Rock Band fans is to transfer the tracks from Rock Band 3 to Rock Band 4 before October 30th. However, the developers said that they are still working on supporting previous Rock Band export to Rock Band 4. They are positive to have it available to fans in a later date.
