The surfacing of a new XCOM 2 trailer last August previews Dark Events, a stage in the game which would twist the game story. As a kind of counter operations unit emerges, darker challenges adds to the element of unpredictability to the game.
A trailer of XCOM2: Welcome to the Avenger which was unveiled by Firaxis Games last August features the Dark Events, wherein the protagonists face another challenge in the form of enemy black operations projects. Dark Events is a strategy layer which provides counter operations against Advent, a human organization collaborating with alien invaders. When executed successfully, Dark Events shall inject a random modifier wherein some will have real impact on action, PC Gamer reported. The stage also offers improving the Advent soldiers' gear for a more dramatic gameplay. In addition, the organization also negatively affect XCOM as supply drops and extra number of Faceless enemies are hidden among the populace of each mission.
The 12 minute preview shows a setting 20 years after XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The story revolves around a nightmare scenario wherein some humans have succumbed to the alien invaders in the form of Advent. Such puppet government's actions range from minor which includes improving of Advent soldiers' gears to major like deploying UFOs or slipping Faceless aliens to disguise as innocent civilians. Players could be able to combat the Advent with deploying Guerilla Ops. Games Mix Down discussed that Dark Events provide in-game modifiers which randomly appear wherein players would be able to allocate resources, train troops, and manage funds.
In general, procedurally generated levels, unpredictability, and replay value to the game are what Dark Events has to offer, according to Lazy Gamer. Such stage is also reported to be deeper and more strategic in terms of randomized missions, compared to XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
Battle the puppet government Advent through guerilla warfare tactics in Dark Events, which releases on February 5, 2016.
