GDF Suez is considering taking an active role in the French bid for the nuclear reactor project in Saudi Arabia.
Gerald Mestrallet, CEO of GDF Suez said, "GDF is ready to cooperate, on the condition that we are given the right amount of room."
Mestrallet said that there are current talks about a possible bid in Saudi Arabia for the nuclear reactor which will have 17 gigawatts of nuclear capacity.
To date, Reactor builder Areva and French utility EDF have dominated the industry when it comes to building nuclear reactors. This in turn is pushing GDF Suez to take a more active role after winning a contract to build a plant in Turkey. This contract was part of a consortium that includes Itochu Corporation and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.
"We will never take an entire nuclear project on our balance sheet. We will always be in partnerships, at least at the 50 percent level," commented Mestrallet.
