Episode 2 of The Returned aired last Saturday and AV Club provided some information on what happened during the episode. Most of the people were trapped in a non-geographical sense for one reason or another. The inhabitants, both living and the dead, have stepped into a confinement of some kind. Camille and her mother left the comfort and safety of their home but came back after being given a warning and a beating, respectively. Jerome boarded himself up within a house, Toni accepts Pierre's request to the Helping Hand, getting in a space which seems far more concerned with keeping him in than keeping others away. Meanwhile, Serge is trapped by blood which, as the show suggests, could be "the most traumatic trap of all".
Serge's father, Milan, has returned which indicated an unknown and dangerous shift in the direction of the living and the dead. The viewers learned through a flashback that Milan was a prominent authority figure in town 35 years before and he was the one who proceeded an order that led to the death of Victor and his mother. Aside from that, Serge and Lucy are both terrified of Milan. Proving that the recently returned caused tension, the resident psychic and unofficial leader gets freaked out.
Victor's death was a warning, as per AV Club, but panic lead to shootings and Pierre killing his fellow invaders rather than letting him kill the father. According to Realty Today, the first episode of "The Returned" season 2 connected the viewers with the previous season and their favorite characters are bringing in a whole new twist.
The first episode ended with Adele's labor and telling the doctor that she's only six months pregnant although the doctors told her that the baby is already fully developed. Aside from having a fully developed baby in its second trimester, fans have become more shocked when Adele confessed to Pere Jean-Francois that Thomas is not the father of her child. She also admitted that she has tried to abort the baby many times.
As written by TV.com, The Returned made a different approach of the undead. France's emotional, artful, and restrained perspective of the undead were the main drivers of the first season of The Returned. Zombies are seen to be scary and gruesome but never poetic and gentle as the ones seen in the show. A dead returns to life with memories intact leading up to his or her death. They don't want human flesh but instead, they alter the world of the living with romance, intrigue, and tragedy.
