Quantic Dreams Resurrects 2012 Project Kara as Detroit: Become Human

By

The 2012 PS3 tech demo Project Kara will be resurrected by Quantic Dreams as Detroit: Become Human as announced by the developers during Paris Game Week a couple of days ago. According to Warp Zoned, Detroit will be available for the PS4 regardless of the earlier denials of the developers.

"At the time, the developer was adamant in their assertion that Kara wouldn’t be their next project. And they kept their word, releasing Beyond: Two Souls for the PS3 in 2013." said John Scalzo of Warp Zoned.

However, it looks like Kara's story will still be told - that is, in the name of Detroit this time around. David De Gruttola, better known in the English speaking world as David Cage, was quoted in the official PlayStation Blog. "So we imagined our world in a near future where androids like Kara would look, speak, and move like real human beings. We wondered how we — humans — would react if we were confronted with a new form of intelligence, how androids conceived as machines would be perceived if they started to have emotions...I am really excited to announce that Quantic Dream’s new title is called Detroit."

Cage is one of the rare breed of designers/developers with the auteur mentality of creating games. This kind of artistic intent in games was popularized by Hideo Kojima which put him in a bit of a negative light.

Quantic Dreams under Cage cultivated a reputation as being one of the best independent game developing company when it comes to narrative experiences. Their previous games Beyond Two Souls and Heavy Rain were heavily story-driven experiences.

Cage said that the story of Kara is not about exploring AI, but rather what will people do when faced with machines that have emotions. Kotaku Australia said that, "Designer David Cage wondered what happened next, setting up the events of Detroit."

Detroit's release is still up in the air, but one thing is for sure, the game will be a PS4 exclusive.
