To cut losses from the agriculture sector, the minister of food and agriculture of the African country of Ghana encouraged nucleus farmer investors to give their support to out-growers. Clement Kofi Humado said that these out-growers are in need of more silos, drying facilities and warehouses to manage the recent after-harvest losses.
"This should be done under off-taker contract arrangements with smallholder farmers," the minsster said in a statement made during the launch of the 29th National Farmers Day in Accra, Ghana. The theme of the celebration is "Reducing Post-Harvest Losses for Sustainable Food Security and Nutrition" which will be held in the southern district of South Tongu.
An agency from the United States has invested in the project, said Humado. The United States Agency for International Development Advance Project partnered with the local Ghana Grains Council to create a venture which will target model warehousing and receipt operations.
Other bank groups have shown support and interest in the project, added the minister.
