Two major South Korean boy bands, Big Bang and EXO, are going head to head for most of the major categories this year on the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).
Big Bang and EXO bands managed by YG Entertainment and SM Entertainment, respectively are competing for the following titles: Best Male Group, Oupu Best Dance Performance Group, UnionPay Artist of the Year, and UnionPay Song of the Year.
According the MAMA website as reported by Movie News Guide, EXO currently holds the majority of the votes for the Best Male Group and Oupu Best Dance Performance. Big Bang, on the other hand, holds the other two awards as well as the award for the Best Music Video, which EXO was not nominated for.
Last year, only EXO won awards namely, Best Male Group, Album of the Year, and Artist of the Year, as Big Bang was still in hiatus. However, Big Bang made a comeback this year with the release of the band's third studio album "MADE" as reported by Rolling Stone. The album's singles were released every month from May up to September in a set of mini albums, consisting of two songs each mini album, namely "M", "A", "D", and "E".
EXO, on the other hand, released their second studio album Exodus last March with the singles "Call me Baby" and "Love Me Right." A month after that, they released a mini web-series called EXO next door. Just recently, EXO released their debut Japanese single Love Me Right ~ Romantic Universe ~ topping the Oricon charts as told by MWave.
The major awards of the event include UnionPay Song of the Year, UnionPay Artist of the Year, and UnionPay Album of the Year. The first two will be judged according to online votes, research, a MAMA professional panel, music sales, record sales, and a MAMA selection committee while the last major award will only be judged according to a MAMA professional panel, record sales, and a MAMA selection committee.
This year's MAMA is going to be held on Wednesday, December 2 at Hong Kong AsiaWorld-Expo.
