'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Updates: Kylo Ren's Lighsaber an Ancient Design; Leia Not a Princess Anymore; Snoke as Powerful Villain

By

Nearly a month left before the world wide premiere of "Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens", fans are given a few plot details here and there which further hypes the anticipation. A kick-off celebration from Disney gave a few details about Kylo Ren's sword, Abrams says nobody calls Leia a princess anymore and Serkis had something to say about his mysterious character.

Ever since the first trailer came out a year ago, Kylo Ren's crossguard saber has piqued the curiosity of the Star Wars fandom. Aside from the design itself, its crudeness has led to a lot of speculations about the nature of the lightsaber and the user as well.

While it is clear that the carrier of the red light saber is from the dark side of the force, what's not clear is why it is designed that way. In a report by Movie Web, some light has been shed about what Kylo Ren's lightsaber is when Disney kicked off the Disneyland's Season of the Force last weekend. The crossuard lightsaber has been put on display and next to it is a sign that says:

"Kylo Ren's unusual lightsaber is an ancient design, although the one he carries was recently constructed. The crossguard blades, or quillions, are raw power vented from the primary blade."

So Kylo Ren seems to have an affinity to vintage stuff since he modeled his lightsaber from an ancient design and he has Darth Vader's head put on a pedestal. And another interesting thought is that "raw power" the sign says. Clearly, Kylo Ren wields a lot of power. What's not clear is his identity.

There are rumors that Ren is the Palpatine's grandson Ken from the 90's book series Jedi Prince. Others speculate he is Jacen Solo, 1/2 of Han and Leia's twins.

Speaking of the Solo family, director J.J. Abrams also revealed in an interview that Leia is not a princess anymore. Entertainment Weekly reports that Abrams said, "She is referred to as General," and that in the movie, only one character somewhat slips and calls her 'Princess'.

In the same interview, Abrams also said, "The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there's not much goofing around where Leia's concerned," which means fans should expect a more serious and possible problem ridden general which is kind of what is shown in the trailer. Tough there is very little detail about what the war is all about, it might be safe to assume that the forces behind the general are facing off against Supreme Leader Snoke.

Andy Serkis also revealed something about the new character which could be one of the main villains in the trilogy. According to Christian Post, Andy Serkis said in an interview that Snoke is an enigmatic, strangely vulnerable, but quite powerful character. A lot of fans are saying that it is Serkis' voice that can be heard at the beginning of the 2nd trailer, when some said "There has been an awakening." If this is true, then it's possible Snoke could be from the dark side of the force as well.

With all of the speculations looming around, the anticipation grows even stronger as the countdown till the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" world wide premiere turns to 0. On December 18, 2016, everyone will once again feel the force from a galaxy far far away.
