‘Mad Max’ 2 Director George Miller Scraps ‘The Wasteland’ Title, Debunks Mel Gibson Cameo Rumor

By

'Mad Max' writer and director George Miller said that they may scrap 'The Wasteland' any time since it is only a working title and is not official. He also debunked ongoing rumors of Mel Gibson appearing in the sequel. Charlize Theron's Furiosa may make it to future films in the series.

According to Collider, George Miller revealed that 'The Wasteland' isn't actually the sequel's official title. It is merely a working title that is subject to change in any time during the production process. He said, "The more I speculate about what's happening, the more I try to avoid spoilers this far out, and also I find myself talking around in circles. So the best thing I can say is that we're definitely in discussion about making more of these, but the timing of it, I'm really not sure. Probably won't be called Wasteland. I can say that. It was just the working title we gave it."

Miller, who also directed four previous Mad Max films, will be returning to helm the sequel as well as write its screenplay. His leading man Tom Hardy will also be returning to reprise his role as Max Rockatansky since he is under contract for future films in the franchise.

Some speculations of Mel Gibson making a cameo for 'Mad Max: The Wasteland' have been making rounds online but Miller denied that this will ever happen. According to Deadline, the filmmaker said that bringing Gibson back as Max would "pull the audience out of the movie" and that would be the last thing he wants to happen. Gibson played the iconic character in the original version of the cinematic series.

Hardy's co-star Charlize Theron will not be returning for the sequel as well but may appear in subsequent films in the future, according to Overmental. Her character Imperator Furiosa was one of the key players in the previous film 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. Miller revealed, "She's not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there's an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can't really say more than that because it's still in progress."

'Mad Max: The Wasteland' is a planned science-fiction adventure film to be written and directed by George Miller. It is intended as a follow-up to 2015's highly successful reboot 'Mad Max: Fury Road', which grossed $374 million in the box office. The previous film starred Hardy as Max, Theron as Furiosa, Nicholas Hoult as Hux, Hugh Keays-Byrne as Immortan Joe, Rosie Hutington-Whiteley as The Splendid Angharad, and Zoe Kravitz as Toast The Knowing.
