Night Dive Studios confirmed that they are no longer satisfied with just re-releasing System Shock. The company is ready to dive into a full remake of the classic sci-fi horror game. In addition, a System Shock 3 release is being considered by Night Dive as well.
Tweak Town reported this quote from the studio. "Night Dive is developing a full remake of the original System Shock, going well beyond the basic re-release that launched a couple months ago. Night Dive has acquired the full rights to the franchise, and Kick says he's been working with Robert Waters, the game's original concept artist, to reimagine his designs from the early 1990s."
Mat Smith of Engadget disclosed that Night Dive is not only working on the remake. "...there was something else to whet appetites too: Night Dive's Larry Kuperman told Fast Company that the team is 'having some conversations' around the notion of System Shock 3 — although it's currently framed around words about maybe and someday..." said Smith.
This desire of Night Dive to remake the original System Shock is well within their capacity. But Smith thinks that a System Shock 3 would most likely require a larger publisher than Night Dive.
It can be recalled that Night Dive through Good Old Games (GOG) re-released System Shock. The GOG enhanced edition is DRM-free with a few UI and control tweaks, plus a little graphical face lift. Based on the video, it looks like the enhanced edition is much more playable with enhanced textures, while still retaining the original art direction.
Shadowrun and System Shock are the first two pioneers when it comes to the Cyberpunk genre. While Shadowrun debuted for the Megadrive and SNES, System Shock was a completely immersive experience for the PC which inspired games like Deus EX and Bioshock.
System Shock is a great game, but a product of its time. Having played the original game during the 90's, most modern gamers would've given up in frustration wrestling with the controls of the game. The original System Shock was an FPS Cyberpunk Horror game that used the Ultima Underworld 3D engine to the fullest.
The System Shock full remake release date is not yet available as of press time.
