According to a the 2012 Private Equity and Venture Capital in the Middle East Annual Report, the total number of investments rose 8.33% to 91 in 2012. The reported number of investments in the previous year, 2011, was only 84.
The report also showed that the total value of funds rose to US$1.1 billion from US$200 million in 2012 and 2011, respectively. However, the value of new funding went down to US$400 million in 2012 from US$900 million in 2011. Meanwhile, the average investment size stayed at US$8 million. This value has not changed for the past three years.
The report stated that: "The reduced level of fundraising... reflects the general lack of deal flow in the region as regional PE (private equity) players continue focusing on preserving and enhancing value from existing portfolios and preparing for successful exits."
The report was issued by MENA Private Equity Association and compiled through a collaboration between KPMG and Zawya.
