CD Projekt Red Throws Whole Weight to Cyberpunk 2077 Development

Cyberpunk 2077 development is going full throttle with afterburners kicking in. The game was announced in 2012, but CD Projekt seems to be aiming to finish the game as quick as possible in the near future.

It can be recalled that Cyberpunk development was done side-by-side with the award-winning Witcher 3. Witcher 3 being a massive game could have been one of the many reasons why Cyberpunk is yet to be released. However, CD Projekt Red is looking to finish the game by focusing most of its resources on it.

A Gamespot interview with lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz cleared the matter. "We are focusing on Cyberpunk 2077. It is a very ambitious and big project, and we need all the people we can get to finish it. A lot of the people in the company are [working on it], and more and more are getting involved in it... most people from the company are involved with this," said Tomaszkiewicz.

In the same article, reporter Zorine Te expressed that the focus is necessary because Cyberpunk has been described by the developers to be even far bigger than the Witcher 3. Te revealed that although CD Projekt is focused on Cyberpunk, the game development studio is also working on a new Witcher 3 DLC called Blood and Wine.

Christian Today also reported the same thing. This time, the one interviewed was CD Projekt Red Senior Vice President of Business and Publishing Michal Nowakowski. He said that there are still a development team working on the Witcher 3, but a great majority of development resources have been allocated to Cyberpunk. Nowakowski also said that development on Cyberpunk started before 2015 but confessed that the game is still in its infancy.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a dystopian future full of mystery and shadowy figures that you can never trust. The gameplay will essentially be action-RPG in the vein of the Witcher franchise. Unlike the Witcher, expect Cyberpunk to have guns, cannons, and maybe even missiles.

The allocation of resources to Cyberpunk is making some fans apprehensive about the future of Witcher 4. Katie Granger of Movie Pilot quoted CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski about the future of the fantasy franchise. "[The Witcher series] deserves some rest. The past 10 years the team has been working on swords and castles and medieval Slavic monsters. So I think it's time for some guns, androids, and some ammo. And a necropolis. So this is what we'll be working on," said Iwinski.
