Adele surely got an early Christmas present as her new album "25" has sold 3.38 million copies in just the first week since its release last November 25 in the U.S. This is the biggest single sales week for an album since 1991 when Nielsen Music started to track point-of-sale music purchase, says Billboard.
The said album features her hit song "Hello" which up to now is on the top spot on the Billboard Hot. Truly, Adele's "25" broke records as it surpassed Taylor Swift's "1989" which sold 1.287 million copies during the week after its release.
And as if the British singer has not had enough achievements already, her album is the 20th one to sell no less than a million copies within a week as well as the largest selling album of the year. This made Adele kick N'SYNC off the throne as the now defunct boy band was the last artist to hold the said record with their album "No Strings Attached" selling 2.4 million copies in March 26, 2000.
Lance Bass, a member of N'SYNC, congratulated Adele through social media on behalf of his bandmates. "We officially say Bye Bye Bye as @Adele says Hello to the World Record of Most Albums Sold In a Single Week. Congratulations!," he tweeted.
Also, Billboard shared how successful Adele's album is by giving out figures and percentages. "41 percent of all albums sold last week were 25. In total for the week, there were 8.2 million albums sold in the U.S. Thus, 25's 3.38 million represented 41 percent of all albums sold in America," Billboard said.
In addition, according to Design & Trend, "25" is also the British artist's second number one album. Her previous album "21" sold 11.2 million copies in the US alone. Also, it topped the Billboard 200 for 24 non-consecutive weeks. That has been the longest running number one song for a female artist in the chart's history.
