Guillermo del Toro's science fiction movie 'Pacific Rim' joined the three-way race for the number one spot in this week's Hollywood blockbuster ladder. The film gained more traction after opening with a modest US$3.6 million.
Pacific Rim gained momentum as the week progressed. Reports said that the film is a monster hit in Asia. Australian moviegoers aren't as thrilled however. The continent, often reflective of American figures, only posted a measly US$666,000 opening day revenue.
The overall global gains of Pacific Rim outpaced many similar blockbusters that went out to sell over US$400 million. The overall success of the film spawned several media enterprises, such as the recently released Pacific Rim: The Video Game.
The film is on an arms race for the top blockbuster spot against the films Despicable Me II, and comedy movie Grown Ups 2. The three films are set to profit above expected returns, disproving George Lucas' recent statement regarding several flops at the box office.
Time Warner, producer of Pacific Rim, increased in value slightly after the film's launch.
