Followers of the "Dragon Quest" video game franchise might be disappointed to know that developer Square Enix still has no plans to release the eleventh main installment in the series in the US. According to the company, it will only change its decision depending on the success of other "Dragon Quest" games in the west.
Square Enix previously said in July that "Dragon Quest XI" will only be available for Japanese gamers. However, the company noted that this could change in the future if other "Dragon Quest" titles released in Europe and the US achieve high sales, according to Movie Pilot.
One of the titles that the company was probably referring to was "Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below," which came out for the PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe in October of this year. It came out in Japan in February and within five months after its release, Square Enix has already managed to sell more than one million units of the game.
Unfortunately though, this isn't the case for the US and UK versions of the game. Although "Dragon Quest Heroes" still has a strong following in western regions, it is not as successful as the one in Japan.
But since the game only came out over a month ago, there's still hope for its sales to pick up. Also, the game's PC version had just arrived through Steam on December 3, according to Engadget. In addition, "Dragon Quest Heroes" is not the only game from the series that recently became available in the US.
As reported by Youth Independent, the developers of the series are planning on releasing "Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past" and its direct sequel, "Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King." The former came out in the US in 2001 for the original PlayStation console while the latter arrived in 2005 for the PlayStation 2.
For the remakes, the site noted that the games will be released for the Nintendo 3DS handheld consoles and are expected to debut in the US next year. Hopefully, the combination of the sales of the upcoming remakes and "Dragons Quest Heroes" will be enough to convince Square Enix to release "Dragon Quest XI" in the west, which is scheduled to arrive in Japan in mid-2016 for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS.
