An executive from Capcom has confirmed that the company is working on a remake of "Resident Evil 2" instead of a remastered edition. This clarifies previous reports and speculations suggesting that the upcoming game will just be an updated version, Wired reported.
Talks about a remastered "Resident Evil 2" emerged after Capcom released its investor briefing report. Drafted by Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company's president and COO, the document detailed Capcom's current operations and future projects.
One of the titles discussed in the report is "Resident Evil 2." However, the original draft of the document stated that the upcoming game will be a remaster. Of course, the use of this term immediately caused fans of the "Resident Evil" series to assume that the new game will just feature improved graphics and audio, and not a full re-imagining of "Resident Evil 2."
Thankfully, Stuart Turner, the senior marketing director for Capcom U.K., took to Twitter to finally settle the issue. The executive noted that there was a mistake in the investor briefing report regarding the status of "Resident Evil 2."
"Seems to be a few people picking up a mistranslation in our own investor report," he tweeted. "[Resident Evil 2] will be a full from the ground up remake NOT a remaster."
A correction was already made in the report and it now states that the project will be a remake and will most likely come out for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Since it is now officially confirmed as a remake, gamers can expect to see new character models and game modes in the updated iteration of "Resident Evil 2." Capcom, however, has not yet provided a specific date or possible release window for the upcoming game.
The original version of "Resident Evil 2" officially debuted on Jan. 21, 1998 and was first released for the PlayStation One console. It follows the main characters Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy and is set two months following the story of the first "Resident Evil," which came out in 1996.
