Game publisher Valve Corporation has stepped forward to clarify certain rumors surrounding "Left 4 Dead 3." According to the company, the zombie-themed first-person shooter will not be a prequel to "Left 4 Dead 2," as suggested through previous speculations.
In the past few months, several fan theories and rumors cropped up regarding the development and the plot of "Left 4 Dead 3." One speculation is that the upcoming installment in the "Left 4 Dead" series will be a prequel to the second game.
According to Master Herald, sources claimed that the game will be set a month before the events of "Left 4 Dead 2." Specifically, the new game will focus on how the zombie infection broke out and destroyed the world.
The rumors about a prequel grew even bigger after a YouTube video was posted about how the zombie infestation in "Left 4 Dead" started. These clips were set inside the same hospital from the "No Mercy" campaign in "Left 4 Dead" and even featured a cameo from one of the characters of the series.
However, in an email to Kotaku, Chet Faliszek, a writer at Valve Corporation, clarified that the video was made by "Payday: The Heist" developer Overkill Software for the game. He noted that it is not an official video for "Left 4 Dead 3" and does not indicate that the upcoming game will be a prequel.
"It is not telling the origins of the infection and is not canon," he told Kotaku. "There is little cameo from one of the L4D characters (the comic should give you a hint) and a fun little easter egg with a payoff later in 'Left 4 Dead.'"
Currently, the exact details about "Left 4 Dead 3" are still a bit vague but Valve Corporation is reportedly prioritizing it over its other future project, "Half-Life 3." It is not yet clear when "Left 4 Dead 3" will exactly debut but the game is expected to arrive sometime in 2017 or 2018.
