A recent report posted by the Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB revealed that the first "Max Payne" game will be coming out for Sony's PlayStation 4 console. Although the company has not yet revealed details regarding its release, the game's arrival on the next-gen console could be part of Sony's emulation program for PlayStation 2 titles.
Earlier this week, the ESRB website showed that "Max Payne" has been rated as a PlayStation 4 game. Polygon pointed out that since the ESRB has been posting similarly formatted listings for old PlayStation 2 games in the past few weeks, the latest rating strongly indicates that "Max Payne" will come out for the PlayStation 4 through emulation support.
As previously revealed by Sony, the aim of this program is to remaster selected PlayStation 2 titles and re-release them for its next-gen console. On December 4, the company announced through the PlayStation Blog that the first batch of games for its emulation program, which is composed of eight remastered titles, is already available for purchase.
Since the program has now officially kicked off, gamers can expect to see an improved version of "Max Payne" for the PlayStation 4 in the near future. Sony, however, has not yet announced when the remastered edition of the third-person shooter will arrive. But based on the other games such as "Twisted Metal: Black," it came out about two months after it was confirmed that the game was being overhauled for the PlayStation 4.
Based on this time frame, the next-gen version of "Max Payne" could debut as early as January of next year. But, since a launch window hasn't been officially confirmed by Sony yet, this new detail should only be taken with a grain of salt.
"Max Payne" was originally developed by Remedy Entertainment for the Microsoft Windows platform in 2001. GTA series developer Rockstar Games then took over and released ports of the game for the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox console during the same year.
