‘How to Train Your Dragon 3’ Spoilers: “Tearjerker” sequel may make viewers cry like ‘Toy Story 3’

The third film in the "How to Train Your Dragon" series may be the last and mark its end with a "tearjerker" farewell similar to the heart-rending end of "Toy Story 3". How to Train Your Dragon 3 picks up three years after the events of the second film. Hiccup and Toothless will embark on what may be their final adventure together as a team. The end of the film may show how these friends will part ways.

In an interview with Collider earlier this year, writer and director Dean DeBlois, said the third film would be the "culmination of Hiccup's coming-of-age". It is a time when both Hiccup and Toothless have proven themselves worthy and have taken up the role of chieftain of their own tribes. This makes way for potential conflict in focusing on their leadership and maintaining their friendship at the same time. DeBlois adds that Hiccup would realize he can make things happen even without the help of his dragon friend and ally. Meanwhile, Toothless will deal with the ups and downs of being an independent dragon, and choose what's best for his own kind. According to Movie News Guide, the conflict may come to a head in a war between the Vikings and the dragons, and result in the extermination of the entire dragon species.

DeBlois also reveals they intend to take the story back to where the books began. The film series is loosely based on the same-titled children's books written by British author Cressida Cowell. The first book introduces an adult Hiccup reflecting back on the time when dragons still existed. This suggests that dragons in adult Hiccup's time are already non-existent.

Official plot details are still under wraps, and that hasn't prevented many theories from circulating in the Internet. The most persistent of these is the plot being similar to Toy Story 3 in terms of moving the audience emotionally and making them cry. Toy Story 3 moved audiences the most towards the end when Andy said goodbye to Woody and his other cherished toys when he gave them to Bonnie, their new owner. In a similar way, Hiccup and Toothless would be saying their emotional goodbyes.

The film's initial release date of June 17, 2016, has now been moved to June 29, 2018. According to Screen Rant, DreamWorks may have wisely decided to delay its release to avoid going head to head with Pixar's "Finding Dory", which is officially set to premiere on June 17, 2016.
