‘Transformers 5’ to Go Back to Its Roots: Focus on robots; No humans in fifth film?

By

It seems like "Transformers" will be going back to its roots on its fifth installment. The franchise is currently developing its fifth movie, but as of now, no lead actors have been confirmed yet. This has sparked speculation that the sequel will focus more on the history and lives of the mechanoids, and that there will be no human characters.

According to The Christian Post, Hasbro may have finally listened to the persistent criticism of many Transformers fans and purists who think that the films have deviated from the main characters of the story by focusing more on the humans and the Earth setting. Supporting the "no humans" theory in Transformers 5 is the rumored plot that the story will not be set in Earth this time, but in Cybertron, home planet of the Autobots and Decepticons. The film may also mark Optimus Prime's last appearance as the steadfast leader of the Autobots, to make way for stories revolving around new members of the Autobots and Decepticons.

Akiva Goldsman, veteran film writer, director, and producer, may have hinted at this development. He is currently the supervisor of the Writer's Room for Transformers and currently heads a team of talented writers. In an interview with Deadline, Goldsman described their creative workspace as a beautiful production designed to remind them of the history of the Transformers franchise. It helps them draw inspiration from everything Hasbro has created such as Transformers toys, merchandise, and animation. The work room is also saturated with aids like illustrations, sketches, toys, and models. Goldsman also reveals that the writers are working at establishing a mythological timeline for the series since it has the potential to expand into spin-offs and more sequels. Among the pool of writers on board are Art Marcum and Matt Holloway ("Iron Man"), and Ken Nolan ("Black Hawk Down").

According to CrossMap, Michael Bay has confirmed his return to the franchise as director. This doesn't come as a surprise to many since Bay has taken the helm successfully in the first four films. There is no official release date yet for Transformers 5, but Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has announced their aim for a 2017 release.
