‘Rocket League’ updates: Game coming to Xbox One but without cross-platform play support for PC and PS4

By

Shortly after confirming that "Rocket League" will be released for Microsoft's next-gen console, developer Psyonix noted that the game's Xbox One version will not have support for cross-platform play. This means that unlike their PlayStation 4 and PC counterparts, Xbox One gamers will not be able to play "Rocket League" with their friends who are using non-Xbox platforms.

News about the arrival of "Rocket League" for the Xbox One broke out last week after the Xbox Wire reported that Psyonix has decided to launch a version of the game for Microsoft's console gamers. The studio did not mention a specific date regarding the Xbox One edition's release but noted that it will come out in February of next year.

However, days after making the announcement, Psyonix revealed another important detail about the game that could disappoint Xbox One owners. Responding to a gamer's question on Twitter, the studio said that "Rocket League" for the Xbox one will not come with crossplay feature due to the technical limitations of the console.

The statement issued by the developer is a bit confusing since Microsoft has already featured crossplay support for its consoles. As noted by Gamespot, Xbox Live members were able to enjoy cross-platform play between the Xbox 360 and PC for the game "Shadowrun" in 2007. The upcoming free-to-play role-playing-game "Fable Legends" is also expected to feature the same support for Xbox One and PC gamers.

But, despite the lack of cross-platform play, Psyonix will still offer Xbox One players exclusive in-game items that are not available for the PlayStation 4 and PC versions of "Rocket League." According to the company, through the cooperation of other game developers, "Rocket League" for the Xbox One will feature cars designed after the vehicles from the "Halo" and "Gears of War" franchises.

Aside from these, the content packs "Chaos Run," "Revenge of the Battle-Cars" and "Supersonic Fury" will be bundled with the game once it comes out. Xbox One gamers will also be able to purchase the "Back to the Future" DLC featuring the iconic DeLorean Time Machine at a discounted price on the game's release date.
