Protests and gun sales grow amid Zimmerman verdict

After the announcement of George Zimmerman's acquittal from his murder trial yesterday, the United States Justice Department said that they will be conducting further review on the case. Zimmerman was accused of murdering African-American teenager Trayvon Martin.

Thousands of protesters across the country rallied against the decision of the court, stating civil rights violations and counts of racism. Zimmerman was a Neighborhood Watch volunteer captain in the state of Florida, while Martin was a 17 year old unarmed boy.

The protests broke in several cities nationwide, expressing their disappointment on the verdict last Sunday evening. Some of the protests involved violent actions, including hurling of stones and batteries to police offers.

The case sparked more controversy on the issue of gun control.

In the United States, gun manufacturers increased in sales amid a series of nationwide tragedies involving guns and rifles. According to the annual Firearms Retailer Survey Report by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, first time buyers of firearms increased from 20.8% to 25.8%

Firearm company Smith & Wesson reported a 38% increase in revenue in comparison the last year's figures.
