In a surprising turn, critically wrecked "Grown Ups 2" reigned victorious over science fiction flick "Pacific Rim" despite generating the most online buzz according to top twitter trends and Google searches. The anime and 'kaiji' inspired film placed only third in the most recent box office count, while the Adam Sandler starrer placed second.
Animated film "Despicable Me 2" reigned supreme for the second straight week, gaining a total of US$44.8 million.
"Grown Ups 2" was the subject of critics' harsh reviews and ridicule before the box office results. The online battery, however, did not affect the strong showing of the film which posted a total of US$42.5 million according to Hollywood.com's recent estimates.
"Pacific Rim", a favorite among comic book and genre fanatics, only claimed a total of US$38.3 million. This figure was an underperformance according to film experts, who predicted at least a US$40 million gross worldwide.
An even worse showing against expectations was the Johnhy Depp film "The Lone Ranger", which only gained US$29 million despite a US$215 million budget.
