X-Files update: Fox Network will pit Mulder and Scully against evil aliens on January 2016

The Fox Network will have FBI agents and ex-lovers Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) reuniting to battle evil aliens in the revival of "The X-Files," which will air in the U.S. on January 2016. CTV in Canada will air the series the same month while Channel 5 in the U.K. will show it some time after.

Sci-fi fans as well as devotees of the cult TV series which ruled the ratings in the 1990s can't wait to see more of the unfolding global conspiracy masterminded by extra-terrestrials who keep on abducting poor human beings for their own ends. But, according to the The Hollywood Reporter, the main attraction is the reunion of Mulder and Scully who, despite they joined together in the last episode a decade ago, appears to have grown apart, personally and professionally. The two agents re-open the X-Files when they learn of a new alien invasion threatening Earth.

The original X-Files series ran for nine seasons and was consistently at the top of the ratings game, despite cast changes in the last few seasons and critics' increasing complaints that the shadow conspiracy involving government leaders collaborating with alien invaders was getting more difficult to follow. The show's trademark paranoia tapped into the insecurities of an audience about to face a new century - and that underlying theme seems to be back in vogue, given the current cultural preoccupation with national security, unseen enemies, surveillance, and science-supported terrorism.

Seen It further whets the fans' appetite by stating that two favorite characters will also return: Skinner (Mitch PIleggi), the FBI Deputy Director who was the former boss of Mulder and Scully; and the Smoking Man (William B. Davis), who apparently experience some kind of resurrection after his death years ago.

While the six-episode arc will premiere in the U.S. and Canada on January, the Den of Geek says that the UK-based Channel 5 will air it for its British audience some time after, with no given month or date yet.

This highly anticipated X-Files revamp is being produced by 20th Century Television and Ten Thirteen Productions.
