"Kingsman: The Secret Service" breakout star, Sofia Boutella, has been tapped to play the titular role in "The Mummy" reboot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Boutella is currently in early talks for role.

The 32-year-old Algerian-French actress is relatively new to Hollywood, but has starred in some French language films. She drew attention in the 2014 British-American spy film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, for her kickass role as Gazelle. She was a blade-legged assassin and henchman of villain Richmond Valentine, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Boutella recently wrapped up filming "Star Trek Beyond", where she plays a new alien ally to the USS Enterprise. She is currently signed on to the spy thriller "The Coldest City" which is in pre-production and also stars Charlize Theron and James McAvoy.

Boutella is a classically trained dancer and excels in hip-hop and break dancing. She has toured with artists like Madonna, Rihanna, Usher, Michael Jackson, and Chris Brown as part of their group of back-up dancers. She was signed on to IMG models and has booked commercials for Nike.

Another actor tapped for the movie is Tom Cruise, currently in negotiations for the role of main protagonist, Navy Seal Tyler Colt. There are no official cast and plot details yet, although a synopsis has been recently posted at IMDb. According to the synopsis, Colt is assigned with the mission to lead a team to track down terrorists hiding in a bunker in the Iraqi desert. These "terrorists in a bunker" turn out to be dead grave robbers in a centuries' old tomb who perished under mysterious circumstances. Colt and his team will have to deal with the same mysterious forces that killed the grave robbers. These forces might have something to do with the titular mummy.

According to Cinema Blend, The Mummy reboot is part of Universal Studios' "Classic Monster Universe" series, a lineup of films that will feature classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and the Bride of Frankenstein. The series has the potential to rival Marvel's money-making superhero cinematic universe. Universal Studios aims to release one movie every year, starting with The Mummy reboot in 2017.

Alex Kurtzman ("Star Trek", "Star Trek Into Darkness") is attached to direct The Mummy reboot and co-produce with Chris Morgan ("The Fast and the Furious" films 3-7). Both are also tasked as the architects of the Classic Monster Universe. They will develop the series and lead the writer's room. Sean Daniel who produced the earlier The Mummy trilogy starring Brendan Fraser, will return as producer for the reboot. Screenplay is by Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus", "Passengers").

The Mummy reboot is expected to debut in theaters worldwide on March 24, 2017.
