Twentieth Century Fox recently released the first trailer for "X-Men: Apocalypse" and posted it on the company's YouTube account. It got a lot of fans excited and talking about it online. According to Looper, the new X-Men: Apocalypse trailer is "chock-full of comic book nerd goodness" and "stuffed to the gills with Easter eggs".
Empire Online provides a detailed analysis of the trailer. The mood is at once dark and foreboding, as it opens with Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey, who wakes up from a vision and declares to Professor X, "I saw the end of the world. I could feel all this death". James McAvoy once again reprises his role as a younger version of Professor Charles Xavier in the original trilogy of X-Men films. He reassures Jean it was all a dream, but it seems to be a manifestation of her psychic prowess.
The trailer goes on to introduce the biggest adversary the X-Men will have to go up against: the Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac. Apocalypse mostly appears as a mysterious and bulky hooded figure, fitted with a shiny, armor-like exterior. He's an imposing presence who sees himself as a god-like and Messianic figure. In the comic books, he's hell-bent on a mission to control all mutants in his desire to kill the humans to recreate a new world ruled by mutants. At one point, Apocalypse grows in size-a nod to his shape shifting and size changing powers in the comic books.
Rose Byrne who plays CIA Agent Moira MacTaggert in "X-Men: First Class" is back. She's seen providing Professor X with the intel on Apocalypse, revealing that he imbues four mutants with powers to become the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Horsemen, the seemingly indestructible foe (Apocalypse), and the impending destruction of the world all seem to be the running in the trailer.
One by one, other X-Men characters are shown. Lana Condor plays Jubilee, who appears in her trademark bright yellow coat. Tye Sheridan plays a young Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, without his high tech visor yet. Alexandra Shipp plays a young Ororo Munro, aka Storm, who gets recruited first by the Apocalypse. Olivia Munn plays Psylocke, also one of the Horsemen. She is important to the Apocalypse storyline in the comic books. The other two Horsemen are Magneto and Angel, reprised by Michael Fassbender and Ben Hardy. Kodi Smit-McPhee plays a young Nightcrawler, who appears to be recruited as one of the X-Men. Caliban is a new mutant introduced in this film, but he's already known in the comic books Apocalypse story as one who has the power to sense other mutants nearby, very much like a live version of Cerebro.
Jennifer Lawrence returns as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy aka Beast, Lucas Till as Alex Summers aka Havok, and Evan Peters as Quicksilver.
X-Men: Apocalypse is slated for a May 27, 2016 release.
