Tom Holland on Being the Third and Youngest Cast as Spider-Man: “I went nuts!”

By

Young British actor Tom Holland may be a newbie in the industry, but his career is off to a good start. The nineteen-year-old who currently stars in the Ron Howard flick, "In the Heart of the Sea", said he "went nuts" upon learning that he landed the role of Spider-Man in "Captain America: Civil War".

In a recent interview with Sway in the Morning for his promotion of In the Heart of the Sea, Holland excitedly shares how he found out that he nabbed the coveted role back in July. He recalls that he was having a bad day and was in bed scrolling through Instagram when he saw a Spider-Man photo posted by Marvel Studios in their Instagram account. There was a teaser line that said to go to their website to find out who would next play Spider-Man. Holland proceeded and was shocked to see his name on the screen. He said he found out online just like everyone else and he just "went nuts". He also revealed that he wasn't sure at first, so he contacted his agents, but they couldn't confirm the announcement. Shortly after that, Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege called him and confirmed the news.

In his interview with The Daily Beast, Holland says that being cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man is "a big deal". He admits he still finds it hard to believe it's real and sometimes has to convince himself by doing a search on Google. On his portrayal of Spider-Man, Holland says it will be different from previous versions in a way that makes Peter Parker a more relatable character to many. He also teases that his version of Spider-Man wouldn't be as ominous like "The Dark Knight", but more like a "John Hughes interpretation" of Spider-Man.

Since its confirmation, Holland is now the third and the youngest to play the back-to-back role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire was the first to portray the web-slinging superhero in the Sam Raimi directed "Spider-Man" trilogy in 2002, 2004, and 2007. Andrew Garfield took up the role in the reboot directed by Marc Webb, "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 2012, and its sequel "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in 2014.

There are still no details on what exactly his character is going to do in Captain America, but it will be a minor part. It has been confirmed that he will star in a stand-alone Spider-Man feature film in 2017, which will be directed by Jon Watts. Filming on Captain America wrapped up back in the summer. Holland will return to film the independent Spider-Man movie next summer.

Captain America: Civil War will debut in theaters worldwide on May 6, 2016.
