Development studio FromSoftware unveiled a new gameplay video for the "Dark Souls III" game during the recent Game Awards held earlier this month. Based on the footage, it seems the upcoming game will focus on a dark period that was introduced in 2011's "Dark Souls."
The latest trailer for the game was posted by publisher Bandai Namco on YouTube and mainly focused on the game's new environment and the combat system that gamers can expect to see. But captions within the two-minute clip seem to hint what will happen in the main story of the game.
The beginning of the clip starts with the phrase "As the fire fades, darkness has spread, and only embers remain, embrace the darkness." Tech Times pointed out that this could refer to the Age of Dark time period that was introduced in the first "Dark Souls" title.
Those who played through the 2011 game might remember an alternate sequence that will happen if they don't perform a certain task. Specifically, if they refuse to place the Lordvessel on the Firelink Altar, the serpent Darkstalker Kaathe will appear.
Once players decide to join Kaathe, they'll have the chance to extinguish the First Flame, which helped usher in the Age of Fire in the series' narrative. But, once the fire dies out, a new era, known as the Age of Dark, will begin and transform the protagonist into the Dark Lord.
Although it is not yet confirmed if the upcoming game will center on the Age of Dark, the captions for the trailer and the overall look of the game strongly suggest that its plot will focus on this period. Even the game's Steam page also mentioned something about fires in the world slowly fading.
As recently announced by FromSoftware, "Dark Souls III" will come out on April 12 next year for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Gamers in Japan, on the other hand, will be able to enjoy the game a few weeks before the rest of the world gets to see it since it will arrive in their country on March 24, 2016.
