Everyone's favorite cake snack is back, but patrons of the Twinkies might notice something not quite right about it. They are a tiny bit smaller. Previously, one sponge cake weighed 42.5 grams, equal to 150 calories. The newest version of the cake has 135 calories for only 38.5 grams per cake.
According to Hostess spokeswoman Hannah Arnold, the change in size was decided during the middle of 2012. It means that the downgrade was already due for implementation before the company filed for bankruptcy. The Twinkes were also expected to have an increased shelf life, said Arnorld.
Last year, Twinkies producer Hostess experienced troubled sales and financial plights. The predecessor company shut down its operations last November, after failing to stay afloat financially.
Hostess Brands LLC owned several bakeries across the United States. Their brand names included Hostess and Dolly Madison. Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, the company is independent from Old HB (formerly known as Hostess Brands), which is currently under liquidation.
The Twinkies were priced at US$3.99 per 10-cake box, similar to its previous price prior to the hiatus.
