UnREAL, Lifetime's smart, unpredictable series that shows what goes on behind reality dating shows like 'The Bachelor', is pushing the envelope this time by placing an African-American character as the object of a dozen women's affection in 'Everlasting.'
Carter Matt says that casting calls by Lifetime issued to talent agencies have placed the search for Darius Hill in front and center. Darius is as far away as anyone can get from Adam (Freddie Stroma), the British semi-royal playboy who was the 'bachelor' to die for in season 1. Darius is an ace football player, sweet, a gentleman, and probably sheltered from the realities of life. There are hints that he was born with a silver spoon. Carter Matt describes him as a cross between Cam Newton and Tim Tebow.
TVLine enumerates the new ensemble of pretty young women that the show will also be casting for. These are the ladies who will claw, stab, bitch, slander, manipulate, and do eveything to win Darius' heart and the prize money: Tiffany, a blond bombshell who is crazy about football guys but is frigid when it comes to men; Ruby, a smart African-American who will not play the stereotype; Chantal, another African-American whose femininity and sweetness make her clash against the more modern Ruby; and Bethann, a sleazy blonde who believes that the South should have won over the North in the Civil War.
In its analysis of the casting calls, Mary Sue says that 'UnREAL' is not afraid of turning stereotype on its head or by confronting the race issue head on. In season 1, manipulative producer Quinn (Constance Zimmer) candidly said that non-white people don't win dating reality shows, and the huge audience turns up to watch sexy Caucasians sleep with each other. But it seems all that will be changing by next season.
There is no word yet on the definite 2016 airing date of UnREAL's second season.
