Jeff Kaplan, the director of Blizzard's upcoming "Overwatch" game, has revealed that the future beta version of the multiplayer shooter will feature a new character progression model. This new scheme will serve as the replacement for the first two systems that were unveiled during the game's closed beta event.
As noted by PC Gamer, the closed beta event for "Overwatch" had recently ended but is still scheduled to resume sometime in January of next year. The developers of the game will then use this downtime to work on various improvements for the game.
One of the changes that the development team will implement is a new character progression system. As explained by Kaplan, the previous systems tested during the beta event were not that effective.
According to PC Games N, the first system offered rewards and level up boosts for player who use customizable abilities with their characters. The problem with this method, however, is that it overcomplicated some of the mechanics of the game. As a result, many of those who tested "Overwatch" felt overwhelmed by the amount of information they had to take in just to level up their characters.
The second system, on the other hand, gave out incentives that can only be used for the characters' appearance. This led to many gamers sticking to just one character instead of trying out the others.
In a new Developer Update video for the game, Kaplan briefly discussed the mechanics of the new system. Although he didn't explain every aspect of it, he noted that the new progression model will be simpler and will only offer minor rewards to avoid affecting players' overall gameplay experience.
"We want to give you these light rewards that don't overly skew the way you play the game," he said in the video. "Your motivation for playing 'Overwatch' should be that it's a fun, competitive, multiplayer shooter, not that you're trying to get more powerful or acquire a bunch of items."
As for the official launch of "Overwatch," Kaplan said that Blizzard is still targeting to release it on or before June 21 of next year. The game will be available for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms once it arrives.
