Honda recalls 22,000 Shadow motorcycles due to faulty bank angle sensor

By

Honda, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, announced the recall of 22,142 Shadow motorcycles, with model year from 2010 to 2015. The reason for the recalls are bank angle sensor wires rubbing against joint connectors that might lead to accidents.

Auto Evolution reported that Honda found out that the bank angle sensor wire and the joint connector harness wire could rub against each other due to engine vibration and inefficient positioning of the parts. The rubbing could cause sensor malfunction and the loss of signal. If this happens, the engine might stall while on the road, which will increase the possibility of a crash.

According to Ultimate Motorcycling, the models that will be recalled includes the 2012-2014 VT750CA, 2011-2016 VT750C, VT750C2 and VT750C2F, 2013-2016 VT750CS, 2013-2014 VT750C2S, and 2010-2016 VT750C2B. These models could be the Aero, Phantom, and the ace.

Autoblog wrote that Honda will start the recalls on February 19. The auto manufacturer will replace the faulty bank angle sensors and properly position the joint connector for optimum effectively. So far, there are no injuries or deaths reported yet. As of December 14, 2015, according to the NHTSA, Honda already got five warranty claims and five field cases involving the issue.

Honda said that there were no adequate warnings given to the Shadow customers. This is why the auto company opted to have those motorcycles inspected by authorized dealers. Honda notified the dealers and prohibited the sales of the Shadow bikes before they got inspected and repaired.

The original equipment manufacturer has developed an updated and safer version of the bank angle sensor. The dealer will use it to replace the current parts in the motorcycles. These dealers will also properly relocate the joint connectors. Both these operations will be given to the customers free of charge.

Honda told dealers that even if some motorcycles were already recalled in the past, the current recall must still be followed. This is to ensure the safety of the riders.
