SyFy grants anticipated double dip of Sharknado

By

After an unexpectedly good audience turnout and an even better Internet buzz, Sharknado was announced to be getting a sequel. SyFy, the science fiction cable channel which broadcasted the B movie, said that it has ordered a second helping of the title.

The sequel, titled Sharknado 2, will be shown next year. Actress Tara Reid, which portrayed the lead role in the film, made no comments regarding a reappearance on the second film. No other casting decisions were announced.

As a way of thanking the Twitter army that boosted Sharknado's popularity, the tagline and the subtitle of the sequel will be decided by the Twitter fans themselves. Using the hashtag #Sharknado, users can suggest their titles to the producers who will then decide the final tagline.

According to Nielsen, there is a link between television ratings and Twitter spikes. "Advertisers want to improve their performance and effectiveness around TV buys, and a better measurement of all facets of the impact of social media will help them," a Nielsen executive said.

The ratings company will perform a research regarding the effect of the giant social media network and ratings, accounting the amount of gain advertisers can acquire through Twitter.
