Google, Apple, Facebook and others request for transparency

Almost two dozen technology companies united in shouting one common chant - Let us talk.

These tech firms, mostly located in Silicon Valley, were concerned about the recent scandal involving the Obama administration's widely scrutinized data surveillance operations headed by the National Security Agency.

The union, which included the biggest names in the industry such as Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Twitter, Google, and Yahoo, released a joint letter addressed to the United States government. The publication stated that greater transparency should be practiced regarding requests involving the security of the citizens.

The tech giants requested for the release of data which will reveal how often the government requests information, the scope of the data surveillance program in numbers, and the specific data being collated. Users of social media websites expressed their anxiety over the data gathering, citing possibilities such as private messages and subscriber information.

The tech companies involved in this request comprise almost the entire money-making partition of the industry. Apple alone generated US$80.5 billion from iPhone 5 sales alone.
