Verizon sheds light on Apple iPhone 5 sales

By

Verizon, the largest mobile phone carrier in the United States, released activation figures which gave a rough estimate on how many iPhone 5 units were sold by Apple.

The phone company said that Apple might have sold as much as 35 million units during the second quarter period which spanned three months. Previous reports said that Apple managed to sell only 26.5 million iPhones.

Market analysts usually make conservative predictions for the second quarter. The projected figure was almost 9 million units greater than expected.

Due to the nature of Apple's smartphone upgrades, analysts believed that sales of the iPhone 5 would have declined as buyers begin to anticipate the next upgrade. In the past, sales declined one year after the release of the iPhone 4 due to anticipation for the upcoming iPhone 4S.

This year, said Katy Huberty of Morgan Stanley, Apple will see a boost in sales from its older units such as the iPhone 4 series and its legacy handsets.

The results will be revealed by Apple after the close of the New York Stock Exchange.
