VW, Audi recall Tiguan and Q5 over Takata inflators

Volkswagen and Audi will recall Tiguan and Q5 model vehicles for defective airbags made by Takata. The dealers of VW and Audi will replace the defective side airbags of Takata at free of charge. Several automakers are recalling millions of vehicles after the recent deaths and injuries caused by airbag rupture.

The Tiguan made during in 2015 from 15 January onwards and Q5 build during 13 January 2015 and 3 February 2015 will be replaced with new airbags. The Takata airbags caused some deaths and injuries during the recent accidents. Instead of saving the drivers, the airbags caused more injuries as they ruptured during the crash.

The Tiguan and Q5 vehicles have driver and passenger seat side airbag inflators made by Takata. In June 2015, the driver of Tiguan vehicle sustained injuries when a side airbag ruptured in an accident. However, the person didn't seek medical attention, Audi Spokesperson Mark Clothier as told Autoblog.

Takata's ammonium-nitrate powered inflators were involved with older models. But, new model vehicle Tiguan and Q5 are also being recalled. The driver and passenger side airbag inflators will be replaced. 734 crossovers made during narrow windows of time.

The Car Connection further reports that faulty airbags caused 10 deaths in the US. The recent one involved a non-Honda vehicle. This has resulted in recalling of five million vehicles. The total number of vehicles in the US affected due to faulty airbags stands at 24 million.

Honda is recalling 2.23 million cars in the US over defective Takata airbag inflators, which are affecting every model from the Japanese automobile major. The models include the 2007-2011 CR-V, 2007-2014 Ridgeline, 2009-2014 Fit, 2010-2014 FCX Clarity, 2010-2014 Insight, and 2011-2015 CR-Z. Acura vehicles affected by this new recall are the 2005-2012 RL, 2007-2016 RDX, 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX, and 2013-2016 ILX.

Honda will replace driver side frontal airbag inflators for all these models. The Japanese automobile giant says it knows of no rupture in these vehicles. However, dealers are not in a position to market any vehicle until parts arrive in summer, according to a report published by Car And Driver.

Generally, wherever a crash happens, the seat-mounted airbag should protect the driver and other occupants in the vehicle. Instead, the airbag inflators could rupture with metal fragments spraying at tech driver and other occupants.

VW and Audi dealers are replacing the airbag inflators at free of cost. Audi owners may contact customer service at 1-800-822-2834 or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69M1 (for Audi) and 69L9 (for VW).
