Financial analysts predict that this could be the start of the film industry's expected fall. Recent high-budgeted films grossed poorly during their first week releases, including "Lone Ranger", "Pacific Rim", and the latest box office loser "R.I.P.D."
The feature films tanked at the box office, and industry watchers expressed their concern. Blockbusters are not as profitable as they used to be, they said.
Columbia University's film program chairman Ira Deutchman said ,"These are films are falling into formulas that have been successful in other iterations."
"I think that it is a sign that the formula that Hollywood thought was going to always work for them is reaching its limitations," he continued.
"The Lone Ranger", a Johnny Depp starrer, cost US$200 million to produce. As of late, the film only managed to earn US$78 million.
Even before 'The Lone Ranger' came out, it's not exactly like the entire culture has been clamoring for a new 'Lone Ranger' movie," commented Syracuse University's Robert Thompson.
