When a celebrity honestly shares emotional and physical challenges in a positive way, that's worth our attention. While Adele's rock star status may be ripe for Instagram glitter shots and plenty of brag-inspired posts, it is the talented singer's penchant for honesty and "I'm no different than you" revelations, that should be celebrated by fans.
In a recent Vanity Fair interview, the singer revealed her history of excessive drinking and postpartum mood changes. She certainly didn't have to share those very personal details, but this acknowledgement may have even more psychosocial impact than her empowering music.
Adele didn't glamorize her excess, or diminish her feelings or past frustration. She wasn't running a public service campaign either-just one woman being honest with herself and others-not sugarcoating an image somebody wanted her to create.
One powerful celebrity statement can reach millions of people in a flash. And those people are reminded that they are not alone in the hurdles life puts before them. When you're battling a force that seems bigger than you, it's not unusual to feel like a loser. Knowing that someone with resources, power and adoration has been in the same boat, offers a glimpse of the magnitude of a problem. Hopefully it also brings us that much closer to the professional resources available to become our best selves.
The stigma of mental and physical struggles will never go away if we keep them hidden. It is through the bravery of those who share their own current and past problems and the supportive reactions of others, that we can move toward a better place. Learning of the struggles and success of others is knowledge we can all use.
A celebrity tweet may be worth a lot of attention, but an Adele moment over a flashy diamond ring Instagram shot is more worthy to watch out for.
