On Friday, the National Park Foundation and Gannett-owned WUSA9 decided to team up. Their partnership hoped to raise money to stop vandalisms on national memorials and parks. Their alliance began after Lincoln Memorial was found to have green paint vandalism on it.
Lincoln Memorial was a tribute to US President Abraham Lincoln. It is a famous landmark in Washington DC's National Mall. The Memorial became a site for several celebrated speeches and events since 1992.
Lincoln Memorial's statue's weight with pedestal was 175 tons and was worth US$88,400. The cost of the whole building was said to be US$2,957,000. In 1911, President Taft signed the bill that created Lincoln Memorial Commission which was assigned to oversee the construction. Records stated that initially, the US Government allotted only US$2 million in funds.
Lincoln Memorial was maintained by National Park Service. The organization hired workers that would clean the popular attraction. However, the maintenance costs of the building were dependent on the money that the National Mall would raise. Since the National Mall is a non-profit organization, it relied mainly on donations. The money that they would raise would be invested for the preservation of Lincoln Memorial and the improvement of the visitors' experience.
