Iconic singer Cher on Wednesday filed for a conservatorship of her 47-year-old son, Elijah Blue Allman, citing his substance abuse and mental health issues, which she believes render him incapable of managing his financial resources.
Cher Files for Conservatorship Over Son
In a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and seen by Business Insider, Cher said her son is "currently unable to manage his assets," including a trust from his late father, Greg Allman, which contains $120,000, because of mental health and substance abuse issues that worsened after getting back with his estranged wife, Marie Angela King.
The singer is reportedly concerned that any funds distributed to her son "will immediately be spent on drugs," leaving him with no assets and putting his life at risk.
Cher Alleged Son's Wife Unsupportive
Allman and King married in 2013, but Cher's son filed for divorce from King in 2021, a year after they separated. However, the former couple tried to reconcile in November last year, spending 12 days together in New York.
King previously said their time came to an end after four men came into their hotel room and took Allman to a drug treatment facility. She alleged that Cher had hired these men to kidnap his son to keep him from reconciling with her.
On the other hand, the renowned singer denied she hired anyone to kidnap her son. In the petition, it was said that King could not be Allman's conservator due to their tumultuous relationship history, which has been marked by "a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises."
Cher alleged that King is unsupportive of his son's recovery and actively hinders him from getting "clean and sober or receiving mental health treatment that he desperately needs."
With King taking steps to check Allman out of the treatment center where he was receiving needed medical care, it only showed that she was not qualified to be a conservator of his estate because it "would result in the immediate loss or dissipation of Elijah's assets for self-destructive purposes."
According to reports, a hearing on the conservatorship is scheduled for January 5.
