House Republicans have announced their intention on Sunday to issue a new subpoena for Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, in the coming weeks.
According to CNBC, the decision comes after the younger Biden's legal team expressed willingness to comply with a "proper" subpoena following the president's son's defiance of an initial congressional subpoena for a closed-door deposition last December.
The announcement was made through a letter from House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to Biden's lawyer, Abbe Lowell.
The House Republicans acknowledged Lowell's offer to accept a "new proper" subpoena and stated their readiness for its issuance to compel Biden to appear at a deposition on a new date in the coming weeks.
Hunter Biden Agreed to Give Public Testimony
The recent letter responds to Lowell's message on Friday, in which he conveyed Hunter Biden's willingness to give public testimony. The president's son had previously declined a congressional subpoena to testify behind closed doors in December but agreed to give public testimony.
That angered House Republicans, leading to efforts by Comer and Jordan to hold him in contempt of Congress for defying the subpoena. Congress will vote next week on whether to hold the younger Biden in contempt for his initial subpoena defiance.
In his letter, Lowell noted that the initial subpoenas were legally invalid as they were issued before the presidential impeachment inquiry they served was formalized.
However, Comer and Jordan refuted this claim on Sunday, emphasizing that "the issuance of these subpoenas does not in any way suggest or imply that the Committees believe the assertions in your January 12 letter to have any merit."
The lawyer also criticized Comer and Jordan for pursuing a contempt vote despite Biden's agreement to give public testimony.
House Republicans Investigating the Foreign Business Dealings of Hunter Biden
House Republicans have been investigating the foreign business dealings of Hunter Biden. Despite little concrete evidence, they claimed that President Joe Biden unlawfully benefitted from these transactions.
The president's family and the White House have since denied any claims of wrongdoing. The probe on Hunter Biden is part of a broader impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden, which is one of some impeachment investigations that House Republicans are leading.
Meanwhile, Jordan himself also faces a set of challenges. He was unanimously referred to the bipartisan House Ethics Committee for refusing to respond to a subpoena.
Jordan was subpoenaed to testify on what he knows regarding former President Donald Trump's role in the US Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021.
